After months of use, sometimes it’s best to take the day and give your A/C some much needed TLC. After all, regular maintenance will make your unit last much longer. By performing a cleaning and checkup, your A/C unit should run much more efficiently. Here are the steps to performing an effective tune-up.
Step 1: Shut off the power! This is one of the most important steps. Best practice is to shut off the power on your breaker, as well as on the unit itself. Moving parts can be very dangerous.
Step 2: Remove the fan cage. Usually held on by screws, remove the fasteners and pull the fan or cage away from the unit. Using your hand or a vacuum, remove the dirt and debris that may be inside.
Step 3: Spray the fins from the inside out to clear them of debris. Normal hose pressure is more than sufficient, and it is not recommended you use a pressure washer.
Step 4: Straighten any fins. Over time, it is normal for something to knock into the fins, which can shift them. By using a knife, you can straighten them out, rendering them as good as new!
Step 5: Check the level. Sometimes, these units can tilt over time due to the ground underneath, or because of age. If needed, place shims underneath to achieve a level condenser.
(Note: Some heat pumps should be at an angle, to allow defrost run-off.)
Step 6: Change the blower filter. This should primarily be done twice per year, but it’s OK if you’ve forgotten.
Step 7: Ensure that you’ve put everything back together the same way you took it apart, and turn the power back on. Your A/C should be running perfectly and much more efficiently than before.
