Take a look at your air conditioner’s filter. Is it covered with dust, dirt or debris? If so, it’s time to give it a good cleaning. A dirty filter can have a negative impact on the air you breathe inside your home and can cause system failure. See below to find out how to give your filter a deep cleaning.

First, you need to locate the filter. It can usually be found in the return vent or in the unit itself. Remove it and vacuum off all of the dust and grime. In some cases this is all that is required, but if you are still seeing dirt you may need to give it some extra attention.

If you have a washable filter, run it under warm water in the sink or in the shower. You can also spray it off with a garden hose. Still not clean? Try mixing in a bit of mild soap or vinegar with the water and let it soak for about an hour. When an hour has passed, be sure to give it a good rinse and let it dry completely before putting it back in place.

Keep in mind that if your air conditioning filters are left unclean over a period of time, you will notice considerable increases in the amount of energy you are paying for on a monthly basis and the life of your equipment will be shortened.
