It should come as no surprise that most of us would prefer not to bake in the Florida sun — OK, maybe for a little color. But on days where it’s just plain hot and the only thing you want to do is cool off, you turn to your A/C, right? While that’s a great choice, consider changing around your A/C habits and trying one of these alternatives — it just might save you some money!

Man with an electric fan trying to cool down. I need an air conditioner!

  • A makeshift air conditioner works for small rooms and spaces. Place a shallow bowl of ice water in front of a fan. As the ice evaporates, it will send cool air billowing into the room.
  • If it seems hotter inside than outside, you may find yourself opening windows. If this is the case, spray a bedsheet with cold water, and cover the opening to the window with it. When the next breeze kicks up, it will pass through and bring chilled air into the room!
  • Close off those vents! If you spend time in the basement, you’ve probably make the connection that cool air naturally falls, and will cool off the basement either way. By closing off the vents, you’ll force more of the air up top, cooling the rest of your home as it makes its way down.
  • Replace your filter. We know this one is obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people say “I’ll do it next summer.” In reality, neglecting your filter causes an increase in cooling costs, as your unit is forced to work harder.

While there are many more ways to lower costs, these few prove to be some of the easier ideas, and they won’t cost you anything (except a filter) at all!
