Do you run your home’s cooling system all year ‘round? With the warm, humid climate we have down in South Florida for the majority of the year, lots of homeowners keep their systems pumping. But this isn’t the best idea especially when temperatures dip down a few degrees. Keep in mind that the more your system runs, the more likely it is to experience breakdowns or malfunctions – so here are a few alternative ways to keep your home comfortable this season:
- Consider a heat pump: rather than running your home’s heating or cooling system when it gets a bit cooler outside, you can run a heat pump instead. It works by extracting heat from the air outdoors and brings it into your home to keep you cozy. Since a heat pump transfers heat rather than create it, it’s much more energy efficient.
- Turn on those ceiling fans: as the weather outside cools down, you can start up your ceiling fans. Switch the blade rotation so they spin in reverse to bring warm air that has risen back down to the living areas of your home.
- Crack open the windows: this time of year is the perfect opportunity to allow some fresh air in. You won’t have to worry about your home overheating and let’s face it, it wouldn’t hurt to air it out a bit. If temperatures rise above your comfort level during the day, you can always close them and kick your cooling system back on.
